WE BELIEVE IN SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS

Capturing energy in style As well as investing in glass solutions that reduce resource usage, we also develop solutions which help to capture energy. The best example of this is our SWISSPANEL SOLAR, which brings a splash of colour to the otherwise rather mo notonous look of solar panels. A special procedure makes it possible for individually designed motifs to be printed on the front panels of the modules without significantly impacting their efficiency.

Positive energy footprint Producing glass is an energy-intensive process. However, once it is installed in a building, it has such high energy-sav ing potential that the production impact is balanced out. Our glass not only reduces energy consumption during cold weather, but also insulates against heat in the summer – a valuable benefit as we see hot spells becoming ever more frequent. Our solar control glass ensures indoor comfort even when external temperatures are high, and can reduce or even eliminate the use of air conditioning. Our specialised SILVERSTAR CONTROL glass even enables you to adjust the amount of sunlight entering a room by means of remote control, thanks to a blind integrated into the space between panes which means you can regulate energy and daylight levels to suit your specific needs. We’ve been passionate about glass for more than 100 years. And not only is glass timelessly beautiful, it is also very environmentally friendly. That’s because glass is a natural material, and the raw materials required to make it – such as quartz sand, soda and dolomite – are basic mineral resources that come from the earth.

“We firmly believe that every individual person in our company can make a big difference. That is why we will continue to be ‘Green for Generations’ in future too. ”

WE PRODUCE EFFICIENTLY

The manufacture of sheet glass is an energy-intensive process. That’s why we have spent years working on making it as efficient as possible.

Energy recovery We supply around one quarter of the energy requirement for our float glass plants through energy recovery. For all other energy use, we strive for an optimal combination that minimises the impact on the environment. The design of our furnaces, developed in-house, also helps to ensure that our float glass plants are among the most efficient and environmentally friendly in the world.

ISOLATION certifications We are regularly audited and

certified by independent institutes. Our certifications include the ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 international standards (energy management). We have also made a voluntary pledge to the Swiss Energy Agency to continue improving our carbon emissions – in line with our motto, “Green for Generations”.

Fragment reuse system Our patented system for reusing glass fragments enables us to significantly reduce our raw material requirements.

Raw materials We predominantly use local raw materials in our float glass plants to keep transport distances low.

GREEN FOR GENERATIONS 7

WE ARE YOUR PARTNER FOR GREEN BUILDINGS

Worldwide certification systems have been developed to facilitate the assessment and comparison of buildings’ sustainability and to promote climate-friendly construction.

The individual footprint of construction materials is an important factor in all of these systems. The Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) we provide for our basic glass types form the basis for how ecological sustainability is calculated.

Building certification systems From the Minergie standard in Switzerland and the German Sustainable Building Council’s quality seal (Gütesiegel der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen) to the LEED standard in the USA and the UK’s BREEAM certificate (the oldest and most widely used certification), each system has its own set of criteria including environmental, economic and social considerations, which are weighted differently and based on national regulations. We support architects, planners and building owners in achieving the best possible result for their preferred certification system with our glass solutions.

WE PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT

We are clear about our goal: we want to strike the best possible balance between social benefit, the environment and economic objectives, with a view to protecting future generations. That is what we mean with our guiding slogan: “Green for Generations”.

Active waste prevention Specifically, this means that we do everything we can to prevent waste in all areas and recycle waste wherever possible.

Eco-friendly logistics We are also continuously reducing our carbon footprint in logistics: all trucks in our fleet run on economical engines and are fitted with the latest exhaust filters. We are also in the process of switching to

tractors powered by green fuels.

Product innovations Last but not least, our product innovations are also devised with the environment in mind. For example with BIRDPROTECT. We have developed the special glass in collaboration with the Swiss Ornithological

Environmental protection Environmental protection also means reducing emissions to an absolute minimum. We use electric filters to bring the particulate matter and sulphur dioxide emissions

from our float glass plants down to levels which are lower than the values specified in statutory requirements. We have also been using DeNOx systems to purify exhaust gases for years.

Institute in Sempach, to effectively prevent bird collisions with windows. In addition, our SILVERSTAR BIOELECTRIC solution caters to the growing number of people living with electrosensitivity.

“Actively protecting the environment is an important part of our sustainability strategy”

SUSTAINABILITY IN ALL AREAS

We are well aware of our responsibility to the environment and support sustainability at all levels – and that’s true in every action we take, whether big or small.

Cradle to cradle We have developed a new concept for exhibiting at trade fairs that eliminates packaging, minimises transport and uses recyclable, non-toxic materials. Most of the components we use for our trade fair stand are reused multiple times. Where possible, we make use of cradle-to-cradle-certified components.

Training programmes Eco-friendly innovations are the driving force behind our success. We know that these types of innovations are only possible with motivated employees, and we commit to support their ambitions with initiatives such as our Glas Trösch Academy and our training programmes.

Float Honey At our Saxony-Anhalt site, we have launched a project to counter the loss of bee populations in the region: some 15 bee colonies have been established on the company premises in Osterweddingen . A beekeeper cares for the hives on-site, then collects and prepares the honey they produce – which can reach 350 kilos per year.
